Amtrak said it launched Wi-Fi service on Acela trains between Boston and Washington and in gate areas of six major stations, free of charge for an introductory period

. Four ClubAcela lounges also are part of the "initially" complimentary offer, which "will be reviewed based on customer demand and system performance." Amtrak said on-board Wi-Fi "typically outperforms cellular air cards and smart phones," and is compatible with "most" standard corporate networks. Gate-area coverage is available at Baltimore Penn Station, New York Penn Station, Philadelphia 30th Street Station, Providence Station, Route 128 Station in Boston and Washington Union Station. Service at Wilmington Station awaits the completion of station renovations in early 2011.

AgentWare partnered with SilverRail to provide travel agencies access to "Amtrak, U.K. rail, and high-speed European rail content." According to Agentware, which facilitates bookings on airlines not listed in global distribution systems, customers "are increasingly requesting access to both air and rail content in a single search." Rail distribution firm SilverRail added that by year end, it would "be connected with several of the high-speed train lines across Europe with direct connections to several suppliers."

Concur added direct Amtrak bookings to its travel reservations solutions. "Concur clients may now view, hold, reserve and purchase Amtrak rail travel--and compare rail and air travel options--all on one screen," the companies announced. Other functions include route maps, loyalty program number exchange, special rate support, multi-segment trips and automated payment and ticketing.

Amtrak enabled online ticket changes, exchanges and upgrades for customers who make initial bookings at amtrak.com. "Any reductions in fare will automatically be refunded while payment of fare increases resulting from reservation changes can be collected through the online system," according to a company statement.

Gogo inflight Internet provider Aircell introduced a new monthly subscription option that can be used on all 800 Gogo-equipped aircraft, regardless of operating airline. The fee is $34.95 per month. The company's largest airline customers are AirTran Airways, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Virgin America. Aircell will continue to offer online access for a single flight at $4.95 per segment, the company said.

Amtrak will create a high-speed rail department "to maximize the opportunities available in the new intercity passenger rail environment." According to the rail operator, the new department will focus on improving services in the Northeast Corridor--including more frequencies and "determining the feasibility of increasing top speeds up to 220 miles per hour"--and pursuing development of other high-speed rail corridors, "such as the new projects moving forward in California and Florida."

UATP is expanding the payment network to hotel and car rental, and announced La Quinta Inns & Suites as its first hotel merchant. Client demand to expand centrally billed payments beyond air, travel agencies and Amtrak prompted UATP to talk to hotel chains and car rental firms, according to Universal Air Travel Plan president and CEO Ralph Kaiser. UATP founder American Airlines is the first issuer to expand to hotel payment acceptance, in service of client Walmart. The retailer has been using its AA UATP account to centrally bill hotel charges at La Quinta since last year.
